  • Melissa Brown will present an in-depth demonstration of popular legal applications for use in Family Court.  She will introduce you to applications such as TrialPad, Transcript Pad, Omnifocus, Documents to Go, iAnnotate PDF, SignNow, PDF Expert, UPad, Pages, Evernote, Notability, Skitch, Fast Case, LawBox, Objections 2, Zillow, Trulia HD, Padmapper, WestlawNext and Lexis Advance.  She also brings us up to date on the law of using GPS devices in the family court arena.

    Melissa F. Brown

    Melissa Brown practices family law in Charleston, South Carolina, and she also serves as a family court mediator. She is a frequent lecturer and has given CLE's for the American Bar Association Family Law Section, the South Carolina Bar and the National Business Institute.

    She recently wrote an article titled, "COBRA: Do Not Let It Bite You or Your Client," American Journal of Family Law, Volume 19, Spring 2005. It was also published in the Summer Edition of The South Carolina Trial Lawyer magazine. In addition, she has published articles about sealing family court files, The Charleston Mercury newspaper, August 2004, and Family Court Files, A Treasure Trove for Identity Thieves, Family Court Files: A Treasure for Identity Thieves?, 55 South Carolina Law Review 777 (2004). The articles were published in The South Carolina Lawyer (Spring/October 1999, Understanding the New Child Support Guidelines) and The Law Journal - An Executive's Guide to the Law (Estate Planning in the Midst of a Divorce: How to Protect Your Heirs, Spring 1997).

    Mrs. Brown is a past Chair of the South Carolina Family Law Section. While Chair, the Council published the first South Carolina Family Lawyers' Tool Kit. She is the current Family Law Council Delegate to the South Carolina House of Delegates, and she is a 2001 graduate of the ABA Family Law Trial Advocacy School. She is also a member of the South Carolina Women Lawyers Association and the Academy of Family Mediators.

    Mrs. Brown received her BA in history as part of the American Studies Program at the University of Virginia in 1987. She received her JD from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1991. While in law school, she was a member of the National Moot Court Team, the Order of the Barristers and the Moot Court Bar. Following graduation, she served as a law clerk for the Honorable William L. Howard. In 1993, she began practicing exclusively in the family courts of this state. In 1999, she opened her own firm, Melissa F. Brown, LLC.

    She is married to Todd C. Brown. They have two children, Ellen Hudson, 12, and Fleetwood, 10. The family is very active in St. Michael's Episcopal Church.
